Aircraft › Diamond Aircraft › DA40 › DA 40 D
The Diamond DA 40 D is the diesel-powered member of the DA40 family certificated under EASA Type Certificate Data Sheet A.022. It is a four-seat composite low-wing airplane with fixed tricycle landing gear and a T-tail.
The DA 40 D is distinct from both the gasoline-powered DA 40 and the later DA40 NG. Its approved engine installations, fuel type and several weight-and-balance details are specific to the D model.

Diamond Aircraft DA 40 D history and development
EASA certification records identify the DA 40 D as a separate model within the DA 40 type. The diesel installation was developed under Diamond design changes specific to the DA 40 D.
Later DA 40 D aircraft can, where eligible, be converted to DA40 NG configuration through an approved Diamond service bulletin. That conversion does not make the original DA 40 D and DA40 NG loading data interchangeable.
Diamond Aircraft DA 40 D fuel capacity
The standard DA 40 D fuel system holds 30 U.S. gallons total / 28 gallons usable. The approved long-range system increases this to 41 gallons total / 39 gallons usable.
EASA certification data identify Jet A-1 as an approved fuel. Diesel-fuel operation is configuration-dependent and requires the applicable approved design change and AFM provisions.
Diamond Aircraft DA 40 D configurations and applicability
Normal-category DA 40 D
Applicability: DA 40 D configuration covered by EASA TCDS A.022 and Diamond AFM Doc. No. 6.01.05-E.
| Maximum takeoff weight | 2,535 lb |
|---|---|
| Maximum landing weight | 2,407 lb |
The TCDS lists 2,407 lb as the basic maximum landing mass. A 2,535 lb landing mass is approved only when the applicable mandatory landing-gear design change is installed.

Utility-category DA 40 D
Applicability: Utility-category operation where approved by the applicable aircraft documentation.
| Maximum takeoff weight | 2,161 lb |
|---|
Utility-category limitations differ from normal-category limitations and must be checked in the applicable AFM.
Diamond Aircraft DA 40 D model applicability and configuration
DA 40 D loading limits depend on category, fuel-system configuration and installed design changes. In particular, the maximum landing mass is not universally the same as the maximum takeoff mass.
Always verify serial-number applicability, installed modifications, fuel-system configuration and the current approved AFM before using model-level data for flight planning.
Diamond Aircraft DA 40 D weight and balance
For the normal-category base configuration, EASA TCDS A.022 lists a 2,535 lb maximum takeoff weight and a 2,407 lb maximum landing weight.
A 2,535 lb maximum landing weight is approved only when the applicable mandatory landing-gear design change is installed. This is therefore a configuration-dependent limit and must not be treated as universal for every DA 40 D.
The standard baggage compartment behind the rear seats is limited to approximately 66 lb. The TCDS also lists a baggage tube and an optional baggage-extension configuration with separate limits.
WBcalc does not currently provide a DA 40 D calculator. Do not substitute the existing DA40 or DA40 NG calculators for this model.
Diamond Aircraft DA 40 D frequently asked questions
What engine does the Diamond DA40 D use?
Approved DA 40 D installations include the Thielert TAE 125-01 and TAE 125-02-99 diesel engines, subject to aircraft configuration and approved modifications.
How much power does the DA40 D produce?
Diamond AFM Doc. No. 6.01.05-E specifies 135 DIN-hp maximum takeoff and continuous power.
What is the maximum takeoff weight of the DA40 D?
EASA TCDS A.022 lists 2,535 lb for normal-category operation and 2,161 lb for utility-category operation.
How much usable fuel does the DA40 D carry?
The standard system provides 28 U.S. gallons usable, while the approved long-range system provides 39 U.S. gallons usable.
Is the DA40 D maximum landing weight always 2,535 lb?
No. The base TCDS value is 2,407 lb. A 2,535 lb landing mass requires the applicable approved landing-gear design change.
