Cessna 172N Skyhawk

The Cessna 172N Skyhawk is a four-seat, high-wing, fixed-tricycle-gear piston single produced for model years 1977 through 1980. It uses the carbureted Lycoming O-320-H2AD rated at 160 hp and has a maximum takeoff weight of 2,300 lb.

The 172N followed the 172M and marked a change to a higher-power engine installation while retaining the familiar fixed-gear Skyhawk configuration.

The Cessna 172N followed the 172M for the 1977 model year and continued through the 1980 model year. The change introduced the Lycoming O-320-H2AD engine rated at 160 hp at 2,700 rpm.

Compared with the 150 hp 172M, the 172N moved the Skyhawk into the 160 hp class while retaining a 2,300 lb maximum takeoff weight.

The 172N was followed by the 172P, which retained the 160 hp rating but changed to the Lycoming O-320-D2J and increased maximum takeoff weight to 2,400 lb.

Standard fuel capacity is 43 U.S. gallons total with 40 gallons usable. A long-range fuel configuration provides 54 gallons total with 50 gallons usable.

Fuel configuration should be confirmed from the POH or AFM, supplements and aircraft records for the individual airplane.

The 172N model designation identifies the basic certified variant, but equipment, avionics, fuel installation and approved modifications can differ between individual aircraft.

The 172N and 172P are both 160 hp Skyhawk variants, but they use different Lycoming O-320 engine models. The 172N uses the O-320-H2AD, while the 172P uses the O-320-D2J.

The 172P also increased maximum takeoff weight to 2,400 lb, compared with 2,300 lb for the standard 172N. Weight and balance limits therefore must be selected for the exact model and aircraft configuration.

Cessna 172N weight and balance calculations must use the loading limits and station data applicable to the exact aircraft configuration, together with the current basic empty weight and moment or arm for the individual airplane.

Fuel, occupants and baggage must be loaded within the limits specified for the individual aircraft and installed fuel configuration.
