Cessna 172M

The Cessna 172M Skyhawk is a four-seat, high-wing, fixed-tricycle-gear piston single associated with model years 1973 through 1976. It uses the carbureted Lycoming O-320-E2D rated at 150 hp and has a maximum takeoff weight of 2,300 lb.

The 172M followed the 172L and preceded the 172N. It represents the final 150 hp stage of this part of the Skyhawk line before the 172N introduced a 160 hp engine installation.

The Cessna 172M followed the 172L for the 1973 model year and continued through the 1976 model year. It retained the Lycoming O-320-E2D engine rated at 150 hp at 2,700 rpm.

The 172M remained within the established four-seat, fixed-gear Skyhawk configuration with a 2,300 lb maximum takeoff weight. It was followed by the 172N for the 1977 model year.

The 172N changed the engine installation to the Lycoming O-320-H2AD and increased rated power to 160 hp while retaining a 2,300 lb maximum takeoff weight.

Standard fuel capacity is 42 U.S. gallons total with 38 gallons usable. A long-range fuel configuration provides 52 gallons total with 48 gallons usable.

Total capacity and usable fuel are different quantities. Weight and balance calculations should use the actual usable fuel carried and the approved loading information applicable to the individual aircraft.

The 172M model designation identifies the basic certified variant, but equipment, avionics, fuel installation and approved modifications can differ between individual aircraft.

For operating limitations and weight and balance, use the POH or AFM, supplements, equipment list and current weight and balance records applicable to the specific aircraft.

The 172M and 172N share the same 2,300 lb standard maximum takeoff weight but use different Lycoming O-320 engine installations. The 172M uses the 150 hp O-320-E2D, while the 172N uses the 160 hp O-320-H2AD.

Standard usable fuel also differs between the two variants. Weight limits, fuel configuration and loading data therefore should be selected for the exact model and individual aircraft.

Cessna 172M weight and balance calculations must use the loading limits and station data applicable to the exact aircraft configuration, together with the current basic empty weight and moment or arm for the individual airplane.
